SERVING KIDS
Serving Kids provides clothing to children in Jefferson County Public Schools. The organization was started when founder Nancy Hoffmaster discovered how many local children didn’t have a winter jacket. Serving Kids provided over 25,000 pieces of clothing to 1,305 students this school year. If you wish to volunteer, or donate to Serving Kids, call 303-982-2225.
Lakewood Foothills Rotary Club Supports Jeffco’s Serving Kids
After learning about the Serving Kids clothing program from retired Jeffco Principal Karen Cravens, the Lakewood Foothills Rotary Club has committed to donating a minimum of $1,000 annually. Rotary members will present the first donation on April 2.
All Jeffco students are eligible to participate in Serving Kids. School employees identify students in need and submit clothing requests. Thus far this school year, the program has provided more than 25,000 items of clothing to 1,305 students. The items include winter coats, shoes, T-shirts and jeans. While the program offers new socks and underwear, other clothing items are gathered through clothing drives or purchased in local thrift stores.
The Lakewood Foothills Rotary will host a fundraiser for Serving Kids on Thursday, July 25, at The Melting Pot in Littleton. For further information about this fundraiser or Lakewood Foothills Rotary Club, please see the website, http://lfhrotary.org.
“Bottom line, it is hard to learn when a child is hungry or ill-clothed. One of Rotary International’s six Areas of Focus is Supporting Education. We at Lakewood Foothills Rotary Club believe by helping Serving Kids we are improving the conditions to learn, thereby demonstrating the Rotary motto, ‘Service Above Self,'” said Rotarian Diana Huffman.
Serving Kids, run by volunteers who are mostly retired Jeffco Schools employees, began 22 years ago and grows larger each year. Volunteer Nancy Hoffmaster, who is still a driving force, started Serving Kids when she heard about two sisters sharing a coat in wintry weather as they walked to school.
The program is made possible through donations of clothing and cash from individuals, the faith community, local schools and community groups. Serving Kids will participate in the new King Soopers Community Rewards program for additional funds. Partnering organizations include Jeffco Schools employee organizations and The Jeffco Schools Foundation.

To volunteer with Serving Kids, to donate or for information, please call 303-982-2225 and leave a message. A volunteer will return your call.
